Virat Kohli is cricket's Cristiano Ronaldo, says Brian Lara

Batting great Brian Lara said Virat Kohli is not more talented than a KL Rahul or a Rohit Sharma but his commitment to preparation sets him apart.

Highlights.

  •   He is, to me, the cricketing counterpart of Cristiano Ronaldo: Brian Lara

  •   Her fitness level and her mental strength are incredible: Lara

  •   Lara expected the young West Indies players to show great interest in playing Test cricket.

West Indies batsman Brian Lara believes that Virat Kohli is the cricketer's equivalent to football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo for his commitment to the game, while KLL Rahul may consider himself equal to the captain of India.

One of the best left-handed batsmen of all time, along with Sir Garfield Sobers, Lara says Kohli has respected his skills for batting.  ".

"I think Virat's brilliant commitment has a lot to do with his preparation as well. I don't think he is more talented than KL Rahul or Rohit Sharma, but his commitment to prepare himself properly for him  Is. Me, the equivalent of Cristiano Ronaldo's cricketing, "Lara told PTI during an exclusive conversation.

"His fitness level and his mental strength are incredible."

For 50-year-old Lara, who has scored nearly 12,000 runs in Test cricket, Kohli can fit into the best teams of any era - be it the 'Nabadis' of Clive Lloyd of the 70s or the 'Invitational' of 1948 Sir Don Bradman  Are  .

He said, "His batting prowess is incredible. He is a man you cannot leave in any era. If a player is averaging over 50 in all versions of the game, that is something that is unheard of."

Another player Lara praised was all-rounder Ben Stokes, who performed brilliantly in the World Cup and the Ashes.

Lara herself has been part of some of the most memorable fourth innings against Australia where she batted with the batsmen.

Therefore, it was not surprising to see Lara about Stokes' Ashes 135 run not-save at Headingley.

"It was an incredible innings that he played. You should give him credit not only for that innings, but also for his unbeaten 84-run knock in the ODI World Cup final. He came to the round a few years ago (Bristol Pub)  Were. Controversy and subsequent suspension) and he put things aside and sold as a cricketer.

'I don't see it as a work of hire'

Talking about West Indies cricket and how most talented players are being wooed by private leagues, Lara refuses to call them "mercenaries".

"Definitely not," said Lara, who did not agree with the view, some brilliant predecessors in the late '70s who have already set an example by joining Kerry Packer's World Series of Cricket (WSC).

"Every cricketer has to make a choice. Back in the day in the late '70s, there was Kerry Packer and there was an exodus of cricketers. I can't say there's anything new.

Lara said, "Not everyone will be playing for the West Indies. So why can't I play if you're playing a T20 league? I don't see it as a mercenary player."

However, he wants the Cricket West Indies (CWI) to devise a plan that will keep the youngsters at their lowest level interested in Test cricket during the last few years.

"I am hoping that the West Indies do not need to be included at the lower Test level. Series like West Indies vs Australia (Warrell Trophy), West Indies vs England (Wisden Trophy) have always been a legacy over the years."  he said.

"There are 5 to 6 million people, different islands, different politics in the West Indies. You have seen Usain Bolt running not for Jamaica but for the West Indies. Cricket is the only unified force, but still the case to get it.  it has its problems to integrate. Lara said, "is" needed infrastructure.

Lara said that private leagues would have greed, but then it is the patron of the game in the Caribbean, who needs to take the initiative and show the world that they care about their players.

"... This is a situation where, as a youngster, you have the opportunity to go out there and live a life for yourself. So hopefully, it doesn't do too much damage, but it still does the West Indies."  The board is of power. Make sure it doesn't happen, "he said.

"A youngster may want to do different things, (but) if you have a niche, I'm sure you can have the influence of baggy greens in Australia.

"Look at the current Indian cricket team. They have the most exciting T20 league (IPL) and yet they are excited about Test cricket as well as all versions of the game," he said.
He has no opposition to making an active contribution to West Indies cricket, but then he wants the CWI to decide how bad they want his services.

"It is up to the cricket West Indies to decide who everyone wants in their set-up. There has been a lot of participation from former cricketers over the years. As far as I'm concerned, it could be in the horizon, you  Never. Know, "he said.
